What's the difference
between X-Rated and Y-Rated drums?
The DOT/United Nations
packaging standards are based on three levels of packaging
standards, Group I, II and III. These also are designated as X, Y
and Z for purposes of having the designation as part of a UN
package marking such as 1A1/X400/S. The X-rating indicates the
package can survive a 6' drop test. Y-rated drums can withstand a
4' drop test. and Z-rated a 2' drop test.
The DOT specifies which type of packaging certain chemicals must
ship in. For example, more dangerous chemicals typically must ship
in X-rated drums. When it comes to salvage drums, any spilled or
leaked chemical can ship in a Y-rated or X-rated drum since it is
considered an emergency shipment. The DOT regulation for Salvage
Drums 49 CFR 173.3 (c) specify absorbents must be placed in the
void area of the salvage drum to prevent any free liquids. |
